It isn't a culture, it's a horrible way of life!
Emos usually are emo because of great trauma in their life, being raped by their parents for instance. Even being beat bu your father or something of the sort can make you emo. Emos cut so they can feel physical pain as a dampener of the mental pain. It's a way of escaping, like drugs and alcohol.

What Emo Is Not:
Emo is not short for emotional, nor is it a fashion. Emo is not "XxXxXxXOMMMFFGZZZZ IM LYKE, SO DEPRESSED!XxXxX!!!1!!111 IM GONNA SLIT MY WRISTZZZZZZZ...LOL..XxXxXxX" Emo was not mainstream (because it was DIY). Emo has nothing to do with being depressed, sorrowful metaphors, or suicide. Emo is not whiney music sung by pubescent males.
